Vidin and Belogradchick....rock stars and sunflowers...

Bulgaria is how we imagined Romania to be....depressed. Abandoned by a large part of the population after the 1989  m arket collapse, the rural countryside is deserted, factories abandoned, the villages derelict. The town of Vidin has a population of 30,000, but was built for many more. The people have moved to the large centres or have immigrated. It is a pity, since the countryside is beautiful and fertile....the ideal escape, since real estate is cheap. In fact, there is one town that has been bought up by people from the UK.... Sunflowers are a major crop....

Belogradchick is the nearest town to the strange red rock coloured formations known as the Rocks of Belogradchick....they resemble a multitude of fantastic figures. The Belogradchick Fortress was built by Ottoman conquerors among a maze of rock columns and pillars. Bibi made her way to the top of 240 steps....no handrails....but I enjoyed the view from down below, as always more interested in the people....

We went shopping in Vidin...it has a huge pedestrian zone with cafes and shops....but no people...
Unique to Bulgaria....death notices posted on trees...
