Vukovar and Osijek, Croatia.....bullet holes and slivovitz

Early morning on the Danube...coffee on the balcony....

It,s one thing to read about the Balkan war, it,s another to be here and see reminders of it. Vukovar where we docked today was hardest hit by the Serb Croatia conflict of the 90's. In 20 years the city , which was almost completely destroyed, has been only half rebuilt. Ruins and bullet holes, torn up streets and 35% unemployment are the legacy.

Osijek, on the other hand, is a beautiful city with baroque buildings. We visited what was called " the fort".... But it seemed more like a walled town. Inside, a monastery, with a unique cross made of bullets....a church with six 500 year old altars, which were disassembled and reassembled during the 90's war. Around the square in the fort, baroque buildings which house the university....in the square, they,re shooting a commercial with football players...

Ended up in a Croatian village.....so peaceful and picturesque...reminded me of a German village of my childhood. Woodpiles in front of the houses, storks, fruit trees, narrow lanes.... Were invited into a farm to taste slivovitz and wine....
